Borders focus
The Borders attracts people from all over the world, and Galashiels and Melrose are no different, offering activities from hill walking, horse riding, cycling and golf to a variety of fieldsports plus salmon fishing on the River Tweed. There is National Hunt horseracing at Kelso, and Common Riding Festivals in the summer attract visitors from all over. Galashiels, a former textile town, with a population of approximately 13,000 is now a shopping mecca with a wide selection of high street names. The regeneration has led to the GIRR (Galashiels Inner Relief Road), a £12 million undertaking which is testament to the popularity of this Borders town as a commercial hub. Galashiels also benefits from a cinema and sports centre, as well as offering the opportunity of higher education at the Borders College or Heriot Watt University. The Borders is well known as the heartland of rugby, which has provided many Scottish International players over the years, and Melrose, home of rugby sevens, hosts an annual tournament with teams travelling across the globe to compete. Melrose is a charming abbey town with a population of circa 2000. Melrose is cocooned by the small villages of Newstead, Darnick and Gattonside which are on the northern banks of The River Tweed, connected by a feature The re-introduction of the Waverley line between Edinburgh and the Borders will provide an excellent rail link to the capital. Coupled with the A68 & A7 trunk roads, the rail line should spur on the local economy and the knock-on effect could be a continued rise in house prices. Both towns have seen much activity with purchases of small houses and two/three bedroom flats in Galashiels performing well in the buy-to-let market, whilst the mid to top end continues to rise. The demand for property in Melrose continues to outstrip supply, and more traditional homes are harder to find. Investment and regeneration make these areas an attractive option for house buyers. Good location as a result of the mix of services, amenities, excellent local schooling, employment opportunities, sports and leisure facilities, shops and restaurants, coupled with fabulous natural surroundings mean that Melrose and Galashiels tick all the boxes.
