Putting your home in the limelight

There seem few restrictions on the continuous demand for and investment in new, renovated or period homes, both in town and country. But we're continually surprised by how often home owners, developers and their designers, overlook the way lighting enhances the appearance, atmosphere and value of their investment. We're all prepared to spend money buying, renovating and improving our home and we now need to think more about the lighting that will accompany, and embellish this investment.

The priority when setting up or moving home is to plan the living space first, followed by furniture, fittings and accessories - including favourite artworks. These are emotional decisions and adding lighting decisions often makes the whole process very complex.

It's at the early stages that lighting needs to be thought about, because it beneficially impacts the use of living areas and the best ways of using and living with the decor, whilst also giving flexibility. The right interior, and indeed exterior, lighting and finger tip control systems can instantly change mood and atmosphere. It certainly makes living space more flexible, generating the right ambience for the family,  for intimacy, entertainment or celebration.

Plans by Angela Merkel and Gordon Brown to ban old fashioned incandescent light bulbs from our home by 2011 also mean that housedevelopers and renovators, and their designers, have to plan now for the best ways to offer flexibility, colour washes, hues, tones and  spot applications through energy efficient lighting sources.

Even the single central pendant light fitting can add to the allure and enjoyment of a room through installation of a Brand Van Egmond contemporary chandelier and secondary complementary low level wash-down lights.

Adjustable, controlled lighting is a brilliant way to make your home shine, impress your friends and guests and help you make the best use of your living spaces. No longer an afterthought, well designed and selected lights and lighting controls help give you the most pleasure from your home.
