Land, Development & Residential Investment Client Testimonials

In Spring 2014, the Board of Trustees of Capability Scotland appointed Rettie & Co.’s Land & Development team, after a competitive selection process, to advise on and execute the sales and marketing strategy for three large buildings/sites in Edinburgh and Dundee. As a publicly funded organisation, we sought (and continue to seek) a disposal strategy that will ensure that the capital receipt is maximised whilst, being a charity, always demonstrating that best value is achieved.

We have been very impressed by the structured process that Will Scarlett and David Reid have set out and implemented. In the case of the largest and most complex site (Capability Scotland Headquarter’s site, Westerlea House in Murrayfield, Edinburgh) the process has involved multiple stages and considerable analysis by Rettie & Co. This has given the Board of Trustees of Capability Scotland the necessary degree of confidence to go ahead with a preferred bidder secure in the knowledge that the market has been very thoroughly tested and that the deal has been structured by Rettie & Co., working very closely with the Board of Trustees, to maximise capital receipt, reduce risk to the Charity and ensure timely receipt of the proceeds.

On a personal note, I would add that we have found both Will Scarlett and David Reid very professional and well informed in their areas of expertise. They have guided us with patience and diligence through a very complex process ensuring that we were able to meet tight deadlines at all stages. Their commitment and flexibility has been appreciated by all concerned.

On the £850 million Edinburgh St James project Henderson Global Investors retained Rettie & Co. in 2007 as Residential advisors. Now, trading as TIAA Henderson Real Estate, we continue to work closely with Rettie & Co.’s Development Services team. We have built a long and strong relationship with the team members and we value their multi-faceted support and professional input to the Residential aspects of this project which will deliver up to 250 world class residential apartments to the Edinburgh market. This has involved regular liaison and input to the project team and architects on all aspects of residential design; dealing with the Affordable Housing requirement; devising a sales and marketing strategy and implementing that strategy to ensure that we identify the most appropriate residential partner for the residential scheme. In our dealings with Rettie & Co. to date we have found their Development team to be pro-active, knowledgeable in their field and highly professional.

Rettie & Co. were an integral part of the pre-sales launch at Academy Lofts.  The whole process ran seamlessly with excellent communication and input from the team helping the development achieve strong early sales and very positive market feedback.  Their enthusiasm and support enabled us to focus on more pressing issues prior to the launch of the development. Rettie & Co have acted in our best interest at all times and we look forward to working with them again in the near future.

“Bank of Scotland (Business Support) worked closely with Rettie & Co.’s Land & Development team on exit strategies for a significant land asset in Edinburgh owned by a client. This turned out to be a complex and sensitive project requiring delicate handling and the management of multiple stakeholders. We are most satisfied with the outcome and the hard work put in by Will Scarlett and his team resulting in successful disposal to a PLC housebuilder.”

Matt Bentley, Director, Business Support - Bank of Scotland

“We have taken ongoing advice from Rettie & Co’s Land & Development, Investment and Research teams with regards to site disposal/acquisition, valuations, and research. We value the pro-active approach taken by the team, the joined up thinking and the first class data that the Development team provide on the Scottish residential market. Throughout the sale of our development opportunities we have found Rettie & Co to be sensitive to the needs of our charitable organisation whilst also working to maximise sales values and minimise negative publicity.”
