A tenant's guide - relocating to Scotland
People move to Scotland for all sorts of reasons - to work, to study, to set up a business - but mostly because they want to enjoy a quality of life for themselves and their families that few other countries can offer.
Moving to a different country can be an overwhelming experience. Aside from finding a new home there are many other considerations from finding suitable schools for your children to mastering the local transport system and understanding the culture and customs, as well as the accent.
If you are moving to Scotland with your employer, you may be offered the services of a relocation agent, or a specialist like Rettie & Co who can help you move and find a suitable home.
We would recommend you consider these three items prior to your move:
- Identify areas where you would be happy to live - in town or in the country
- Research educational facilities in the area to determine whether they cater for you or your children's learning requirements and make appointments to personally view those facilities
- Research the travel options and timetables to and from your workplace.
Schools
It is important to choose the right school for your child in order for them to reach their full potential and to get the most out of their whole experience of school, both in and out of the classroom. If you plan to enrol your child in to a state school you will need to take in to consideration which catchment area you live in, as this will determine which school your child is entitled to attend. If you plan to send your child to an independent private school then where you live does not matter, although it makes sense to live in an area with an easy commute to the school.
