I have sold homes in EH4 for over a decade and have always been enamoured of the area’s charm and wonderful neighbourhoods with tight-knit communities. It is a diverse postcode that has hustle and bustle around Stockbridge and Dean Village and then fantastic family homes with a wee village feel around Davidson Mains, Blackhall, and Ravelston. There are great transport links into the city, lots of beautiful outdoor sections for leisure and nature pursuits, and great public and private schooling options. I’ve always felt that there is the right home for wide range of people at any stage of their property journey in EH4.
There is never a shortage of things to do in the area. For the art and culture lovers, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art has a fantastic permanent collection plus interesting and varied exhibitions. The museum also has a robust event offering, with many of them ideal for families.
Cramond Beach is a great place for an afternoon out. Families and couples head there year-round for walks along the beach‑sometimes with walks out to Cramond Island. I always recommend the dog friendly establishments Cramond Falls Café and Boardwalk Beach Club for refreshment after a walk!
There are so many good restaurants to choose from in EH4. Luckily, the majority of places are wee local establishments with relaxed vibes and delicious menus. Among my favourites are Rollo, the Raeburn, and Hamilton’s in Stockbridge and Cramond Inn.
There are a few superb wine bars and pubs in the area. I enjoy Smith and Gertrude for their expansive wine list and changing cheese platters. You’ve also got lots of options to stop in for a tipple, including Scran and Scallie, Hector’s, Stockbridge Tap, and the Raeburn.
My ideal weekend out and about in EH4 would be a mix of outdoorsiness and enjoying the culinary scene. I would start Saturday off with a nice leisurely ramble on the Water of Leith with friends, followed by lunch at Hamilton’s. Afterwards, there would be a bit on indulgent browsing of the local independent shops on the way to the Botanics or, if a game was on, heading to the Grange Cricket Club. I’d then pop into the Raeburn for a pre-dinner drink before dining at either Scran & Scallie or Taisteal.
Sunday would be a bit quieter and I would take advantage of the convenience of Craigleith retail park and the adjacent large Sainsbury’s. I’d head to Cramond for a beach walk, weather permitting, or a walk on the promenade to reset for the work week ahead!
EH4 is a fantastic place to call home. It is outside of the city centre with all its own amenities and no shortage of community feeling. However, it is handily close to get into town for work or pleasure, making it absolutely ideal.
