As the Chinese proverb goes, life begins the day you start a garden.

That sounds fantastic, but often, life is the one thing getting in the way of making a start on yours. So perhaps now, during this period of social distancing, it’s the time to tackle the overgrown jungle that you’re faced with, each time you glance out the kitchen window.

Gardening is a great way to make the most of your time outdoors, particularly while we’re not able to stray far from our homes. It’s fantastic exercise, beneficial to mental health and gives a wonderful sense of achievement when you can finally relax and enjoy your creation.

So, whether you have acres of land to play with, a 3m x 3m patch of soil, or a balcony in the city, here are some of our loveliest homes with well-manicured and perfectly planted outdoor space, to inspire the budding horticulturists amongst us.

Gardens big and small

1. Skirling House, Skirling, Biggar, Lanarkshire, ML12

The garden of Skirling House is south-west facing and extensive, retaining the lines set out a century ago. A partly paved terrace with cobbled heart shapes, herbaceous borders and herb beds leads to a central lawn bordered on both sides by specimen trees and paths cut through the undergrowth.
