Our Student Guide Of Useful Information

This Guide provides a range of useful information for students on everyday subjects such as bills, rubbish collection and council tax.

A Student's Guide - Useful Information

Once you have moved into your student flat, there are just a few more things to set up. Here is some useful information on arranging to pay your bills, your responsibility for stair cleaning, rubbish collections and council tax.

For more more guidance on your responsibilities as a student tenant, please download this leaflet: Keep tidy and care for your home.

If you have any questions, or would like to find out more about renting a student flat in Edinburgh or Glasgow through Rettie & Co., please get in touch with our team.

Utility bills

You will be responsible for paying your utility bills, such as gas, electricity and telephone. Rettie & Co. will take gas and electricity meter readings before you move in and inform the utility providers that you are the new tenants. They will then contact you directly in order to set up a direct debit with them.

Stair cleaning

You might also be required to contribute to the cost of cleaning the communal areas. To ensure these areas are kept as clean and tidy as possible, please refrain from littering in the stairwell, or leaving items outside your door. Please also note that it is unacceptable to leave cigarette butts in communal areas.

Rubbish

Please ensure that you only put your rubbish bags out on the street on your allocated days, to help keep the streets tidy and to minimise the risk of vermin infestations. If you want to know what days your rubbish will be collected, please visit the Council’s website for more information. Details for Edinburgh and Glasgow can be found at:

As a student you are exempt from paying council tax. However, if one of your flatmates is not a student and is employed, you will be required to pay full council tax. Visit your Council’s website for more information. Details for Edinburgh and Glasgow can be found at:
