At Rettie, we love celebrating the people, businesses and passions that make our communities thrive.

In the latest episode of Made Possible by Rettie, we meet Craig, founder of Grantley Garden Services, whose love of gardening has grown into a successful business helping homeowners transform and maintain their outdoor spaces.

What began as a personal passion became an opportunity to build a business doing what he loves. Today, Craig works with clients across the area, creating and caring for gardens that can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

Through his relationship with Lisa Pitchers, Associate Director at our Rettie Glasgow City branch, Craig found the support to take that next step, while continuing to build a business that now helps others make the most of their own homes and outdoor spaces.

Whether you're growing a business or moving on to a new chapter, it's important to work with people you trust. With Lisa and Rettie, I knew I was in safe hands, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Craig Houston-Hayes, Grantley Garden Services

As the gardening season begins to slow down, there are still plenty of jobs that can help protect your garden through winter and set it up for success next spring. Here are a few of Craig's top tips:

Craig's Winter Gardening Tips

  • Don't Leave Beds BareChevron-down

Winter weather can be tough on exposed soil. Adding a layer of mulch, or compost helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health ready for next year's growing season.

  • Protect Tender PlantsChevron-down

If you have more delicate plants, consider moving containers to sheltered spots or using horticultural fleece during particularly cold spells.

  • Tidy, But Don't Over-TidyChevron-down

It's tempting to cut everything back, but leaving some seed heads and stems can provide food and shelter for wildlife during winter while also adding structure and interest to the garden.

  • Plant Spring-Flowering BulbsChevron-down

If you haven't already, autumn is the perfect time to plant bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and alliums. Future you will be glad you did when colour returns in spring.

  • Plan AheadChevron-down

Winter is a great time to think about what worked well in your garden this year and what you'd like to change. A little planning now can make all the difference next season.
