Pollokshields was established in 1849 as a grand garden suburb immediately south of Glasgow city centre. The eastern portion of the district consists of the original Victorian or 'Glasgow style' sandstone tenements, which remain a popular choice with first time buyers. In the western half there are large villas with spacious gardens standing on the tree-lined streets. Some of Glasgow's best-known architects designed houses here, including Alexander 'Greek' Thomson.
